Food Review: White Castle Frozen Hamburgers

A long time ago a handsome young man wearing a white shirt and tie was introduced to a new food. Well actually it wasn’t a new food entirely, but it was a new concept to him. Most of his peers shunned this food and scoffed at his delight in this little delicacy. What started as a nudge from a friend in Green, Ohio turned in to a new favorite. After his fair share of trips to this eatery, he found himself back home and over 1,000 miles from the nearest White Castle.

This young, handsome man had eaten many of these burgers in his day. He preferred to eat them in fives and even sometimes ten…

I think they were right about gluttony

It’s probably OK that White Castles are not easily accessible to me. However, thanks to Wal-Mart and other fine grocers I can still eat these little burgers. Here is my review.

The retail package

The burgers come in a six pack, and are packaged in pairs. For those of you who know the smell of a White Castle burger, you will immediatly be taken back to that good place (or bad) when you first had one.  The instructions for cooking are fairly simple. Open one end of the plastic wrapper, put in microwave for a minute.

The cooked goodness

The result is what you see. Sad looking patties covered in some dried onions. I found they look quite similar to what you will find in the store.

When you first bite into the burger you will immediately notice the taste of the beef. It has a somewhat rubbery texture, with some onion taste in the background. The taste of the beef is fine, but my main issue is the bun. When you take these out of the microwave, you need to eat them soon or else the bun will get hard and chewy. I suspect this is because of the freezing process. When eating more than one slider, I generally will top each burger with a different condiment. I do this to simulate the multitude of condiments available. My favorite topping choices are ketchup and mustard, honey mustard, bbq sauce and lastly hot sauce.

I enjoyed these burgers. The flavor brought be back to my time in Cleveland, where I was blessed to have a White Castle within 2 miles of my apartment. I suggest you try some of these, while they are not an exact replica of what you will find in a restaurant, they are a decent substitute and worth eating.

They retail for around $4 a box which isn’t too bad considering plain sliders in the sore run between 60-70 cents

Hope you enjoy.
